Abstract Self-healing consists of closing cracks and recovering the watertight properties of cement-based materials and can occur by hydration of the materials of the mixture (autogenous) or by materials added to the mixture for this purpose (autonomous). This study consists of the use of stimulated self-healing as a way of mitigating sulfate attack (sodium and magnesium), with the evaluation of the influence of crystalline admixture in this process. For that, cycles of sulfate attack and self-healing (by wetting and drying cycles in water) were performed, aiming to evaluate the behavior of mortars with three types of cement: Portland, supersulfated, and alkali-activated. The results showed that self-healing was not sufficient to close cracks due to sulfate attack. This behavior was associated with the hypothesis that the high calcium content of the crystalline admixture reacted with the sulfates and formed expansive products, increasing the attack rate.

Resumo A autocicatrização consiste no fechamento de fissuras e recuperação da estanqueidade dos materiais à base de cimento e pode ocorrer por hidratação dos materiais da mistura (autógena) ou por materiais adicionados à mistura para esse fim (autônoma). Este estudo consiste na utilização de autocicatrização autógena estimulada como forma de atenuar o ataque por sulfatos (sódio e magnésio), com a avaliação da influência de adição cristalizante neste processo. Para isso, foram realizados ciclos de ataque sulfatado e autocicatrização (ciclos de molhagem e secagem), com o objetivo de avaliar o comportamento de argamassas com três tipos de cimento: Portland, supersulfatado e álcali ativado. Os resultados mostraram que a autocicatrização não foi suficiente para fechar trincas devido ao ataque por sulfatos. Esse comportamento foi associado à hipótese de que o alto teor de cálcio da adição cristalizante reagiu com os sulfatos e formou produtos expansivos, aumentando a taxa de ataque.

Abstract Carbonation curing differs from weathering carbonation since it is performed intentionally at the early ages of cement hydration. This cure involves applying different levels of CO2 (5% to 99%) to concrete for a short period of time, usually followed by conventional hydration. The objective of this article was to evaluate the carbonation curing in metakaolin-based geopolymer concretes, activated with NaOH and Na2SiO3, and compare them with Portland cement (PC) concrete. The following tests were applied: determination of pH, carbonation depth, water absorption by immersion, void index, and compressive strength. The results showed that after the carbonation curing, the geopolymer concrete had compressive strength and carbonation depth equivalent to the concrete with PC, but with a lower absorbed CO2 content. Although this type of cement absorbs less CO2 but is more sensitive to carbonation. The effect on the void ratio was not remarkable. Furthermore, the alkalinity of concretes can be partially recovered after subsequent curing by water immersion.

Resumo A cura por carbonatação difere da carbonatação por intemperismo, pois é realizada intencionalmente nas primeiras idades de hidratação do cimento. Essa cura envolve a aplicação de diferentes níveis de CO2 (5% a 99%) ao concreto por um curto período de tempo, geralmente seguido de hidratação convencional. O objetivo deste artigo foi avaliar a cura da carbonatação em concretos geopolímeros à base de metacaulim, ativados com NaOH e Na2SiO3, e compará-los com o concreto de cimento Portland (CP). Foram aplicados os seguintes testes: determinação do pH, profundidade de carbonatação, absorção de água por imersão, índice de vazios e resistência à compressão. Os resultados mostraram que após a cura da carbonatação, o concreto geopolimérico apresentou resistência à compressão e profundidade de carbonatação equivalentes ao concreto com CP, porém com menor teor de CO2 absorvido. Portanto, este tipo de cimento absorve menos CO2, mas é mais sensível à carbonatação. O efeito na taxa de vazios não foi notável. Além disso, a alcalinidade dos concretos pode ser parcialmente recuperada após a cura subsequente por imersão em água.

abstract: The shrinkage of cementitious materials is a complex phenomenon of volume reduction that can result in cracking, affecting the durability of these materials. The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 15261 addresses long-term shrinkage without emphasis on the initial phase (< 24h) of hydration, which contains the plastic state of the cementitious material. Therefore, a method was proposed to measure the shrinkage in the first 24h of mortar hydration, on a laboratory scale, from prismatic samples, using molds from the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 15261 (285x25x25mm) and rigid elements that transmit horizontal displacements of the sample to dial gauges. Cement mortar specimens were studied with the water/dry materials ratio fixed at 0.168 and varying the binder/aggregates ratio linearly: 33% (1:3); 25% (1:4); and 17% (1:6). Different exposures to the environment (sealed, open and wind) were applied. The analysis indicated that the proposed method was sensitive enough to indicate statistically significant relationships between the maximum initial shrinkages and the variation in the concentration of the binders, as well as indicating variations in the behavior of the initial shrinkage. The increase in cement concentration caused an increase in the average initial shrinkage of 76% in the samples exposed to air, 54% in those exposed to 5 m/s wind, and 22% in the sealed samples.

resumo: A retração de materiais cimentícios é um fenômeno complexo de redução de volume que pode resultar em fissuras que afetam a durabilidade desses materiais. A norma brasileira ABNT NBR 15261 aborda a retração a longo prazo sem ênfase na fase inicial (< 24h) da hidratação, que contém o estado plástico do material cimentício. Portanto, foi proposto um método de mensuração da retração nas primeiras 24h de hidratação de argamassas, em escala laboratorial, a partir de amostras prismáticas, utilizando: o molde da norma brasileira ABNT NBR 15261 (285x25x25mm) e elementos rígidos que transmitem deslocamentos horizontais da amostra para relógios comparadores. Foram estudados traços de argamassa de cimento com a relação água/materiais secos fixa em 0,168 e variando a relação aglomerante/agregados linearmente: 33% (1:3); 25% (1:4); e 17% (1:6). Foram aplicadas diferentes exposições ao ambiente (selado, aberto e vento). As análises indicaram que o ensaio proposto foi sensível o suficiente para indicar relações estatisticamente significativas entre as retrações iniciais máximas e a variação da concentração dos aglomerantes, assim como indicar variações de comportamento da retração inicial. O aumento da concentração de cimento causou um aumento da retração inicial média de 76% nas amostras expostas ao ar, 54% nas expostas ao vento de 5 m/s e 22% nas seladas.

ABSTRACT Adequate compacting is an important stage contributing for the durability and final quality of concrete structures. The two main ways of compacting concrete are: manual and mechanical (immersion vibrator). This paper has the goal of verifying the influence of those two compacting methods on the compressive strength of concrete from long term data. In order to do that, cylindrical test specimens of a same concrete were molded with different compacting methods and the compressive strength was investigated at 1, 3 , 7, 14, 21, 28, 63, 91, 180, 365 and 730 days. Concrete used was casted in plant. Manual compacting was performed using a metallic and cylindrical rod. Mechanical compacting was performed using a rigid immersion vibrator driven by an electric motor. This study confirmed greater compressive strength in test specimens compacted with immersion vibrator, when compared with results in manually compacted test specimens. However, the novelty of this article is that variance analysis test demonstrated that only from 63 days the difference between compressive strengths is significant. Long term data also made it possible to generate a trend equation with good coefficient of determination for estimating the difference between compressive strengths for the two compacting methods investigated over time.
